Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is allowing students to discover their abilities in a positive healthy manner. Through practice, collaboration, and experience, I hope to empower my students to achieve both goals we set together as a class and personal goals that they are encouraged to set on their own. I want to immerse myself into cultures I know very little about- not only to better myself and grow as a person, but to see what I can do to support their communities proactively. I aim for my students to know that I believe in them, recognize that they are important and that my role as a teacher isn’t to tell them what they don’t know, but to help them grow.  I want my students to understand that they are listened to in all situations whether it is in classroom discussion or an issue that arose on the playground. My students will see that I hold them to high expectations but where I know they are capable of achieving at. My students will always know that they will have fun in my class as the lightness of the environment will make them want to succeed.
I will make a commitment to ensure that indigenous knowledge is present in as many aspects of my classroom as possible. I will work hard to prevent tokenism and ensure that all students are represented well. All efforts will be made to educate myself properly on protocol and various aspects of honouring First Nations beliefs and practices.

I believe that every student is teachable. Not every student is able to learn the same way so it is impossible to identify one method of teaching that I think is the way that a student learns best. I feel that it is my role as the teacher to recognize each student’s need and arrange the curriculum to reflect the best way they will absorb new knowledge.
